The Spirit of Love (John 16:13)

A lady repeated a bit of gossip about a colleague at work. Within a few days, the whole company of over 1,500 staff knew the story. The person it concerned was deeply hurt and offended. Later, the lady learned that the rumour was completely untrue. She was very sorry and looked desperately for ways to repair the damage. But she was unsuccessful as the rumour continues to spread even beyond the country.

In the Bible, another woman spread information about the truth Jesus Christ revealed about her past life (John 4:6-30). Within an hour, multitudes in the city of Samaria believed her and came to Jesus, thirsty for more “gist”.

Be Mindful of Your Words

Consciously or otherwise, man is thirsty for information, and when he gets it from any source, he tends to believe it without questions. And that is why as Christians, we must be mindful of what we utter to anyone about others. Even when what we are about to say is true, we must say it with the consideration of the person concerned, to avoid defamation of character. Our words must be guided by love.

Jesus assured His disciples that, “when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (John 16:13). The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Love are one and same, occasioned by the coming of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit indwells you, all your words and actions will be inspired by love. You will never be tempted to speak evil about anyone, but to speak love.

Allow the Spirit of Love to indwell you; not the spirit of gossip!

In the professional world, we make business contacts and seal up contracts when we show a high level of concern and commitment towards the person or contract.

It’s high time we took that sinful friend, colleague, neighbour or spouse as a spiritual contract with God. We must submit ourselves to the “Spirit of Love” to direct us on the right words to say, the right approach to follow, the right time to act, the right opportunity to seize and the right strategy to adopt to evangelize them.

Allow the Spirit of Love to indwell you; not the spirit of gossip!
